Halyards is an applied social science research and development initiative from Jeff Proctor--a multi-disciplinary practitioner with over two decades experience in the social and corporate sectors. Jeff's work explores the characteristics of the real-world experiences that catalyze personal, organizational, and community growth and integrates insights from that exploration into the design of learning, media, and consumer products and services that make growth opportunities more accessible and enjoyable.
Halyard Theory extends Kaufman's Sailboat Metaphor (see right) through the inclusion of halyards--the ropes used to raise the sails of actual boats.
The Sailboat Metaphor, developed by cognitive scientist Scott Barry Kaufman, further develops the perspective on self-actualization originally popularized in Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Kaufman identifies two categories of needs: Security needs must be met to keep the metaphorical boat afloat, while meeting Growth needs allows an individual to "raise their sail" and propel forward.
